Istanbul: Cutting

Istanbul, circumcision clothing

Cutting. You know those little boys with the white outfits with capes and hats who I saw cavorting happily outside the Blue Mosque? I thought maybe they were traditional dancers of some sort? My new cultural interpreter, "Alican," informed me that these boys were dressed this way because it was the day for their circumcision. .... Ohhhhhh. ...... ouch.

I later saw a couple of boys in the white suits sans capes. I wondered if they'd already been circumcised - decapped, as it were. I saw no visible sign of pain, however. Maybe they'd had the benefit of an anesthetic? Or maybe I was just wrong.
